This is a collection of photos, with descriptions to explain how various types of first, second and third line gear works together.

3 Day Pack + Chest Rig

This is my primary gear set up.  It includes all the gear seen on the “my gear page.”  I am wearing a MOLLE modular chest rig with spaces for five AR15 (or similar) magazines.  In front of these I am carrying two pistol magazine pouches that each will hold two pistol magazines.  In one I have a multi tool and cleaning kit.  The belt based first line with kydex holster and pistol magazine pouches works well with this set up.  I am wearing a Kelty three-day pack.

Load Bearing Equipment w/Buttpack and Civilian Pack

This picture shows how a civilian pack can be adopted for our uses.  This one is black but a brown or green one would be even better.  It is worn with an “ALICE” load bearing system consisting of belt and suspenders.  On the belt are a butt pack, two canteens, two magazine pouches and a combat knife.  The butt pack/civie pack combo allows for a reasonable amount of sustainment gear.  In shopping for a civilian pack to use with this set up make sure it is constructed well and will be comfortable fully loaded.  When wearing an ALICE LBE first line gear (like a combat knife or pistol) needs to be carried on “dropleg” rigs and in the pockets.

Load Bearing Equipment + Medium ALICE Pack

This picture shows another classic ALICE belt/suspenders system combined with a medium ALICE rucksack.  This LBE does not have a butt pack, but two smaller older pouches have been added to carry survival equipment.  The Medium rucksack is a good, well made alternative to much more expensive “tactical” packs.  There are several decent modifications that can be made to it, including replacing the issue straps with much more comfortable after market versions.  There is a large ALICE rucksack as well.  You might want to look for one of these if you live in a colder climate.

MOLLE Armored Plate Carrier

This is an Eagle industries plate carrier.  It is a good option if you decide you want to carry armor.  Most plate carriers and vests available now have MOLLE attachments.  This allows you to mix and match various pouches to carry what you feel you may need as well as balance it on your gear.  This example has room for two pistol magazines, four rifle magazines, “dump pouch,” small survival kit and a hydration bladder on the back.  Again, first line gear needs to be on dropleg rigs.
